CARING FOR YOUR NEW PUPPY
*NEWEST VACCINE INFO* NEWEST RESEARCH SUGGESTS FIRST DISTEMPER/PARVO SHOT AT 8-9 WEEKS, A BOOSTER AT 20 WEEKS, THEN ONE YEAR LATER. YOUR DOG MOST LIKELY WILL NEVER NEED ANOTHER. YOU CAN TITER YOUR DOG EVERY FEW YEARS TO CHECK. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE RABIES WHICH IS STILL REQUIRED EVERY THREE YEARS DESPITE TESTS SHOWING PROTECTION AFTER SEVEN YEARS. hopefully THEY WILL SOON CHANGE THE LAWS ON THIS, UNTIL THEN WE ARE AT THE MERCY OF THE POWERS THAT BE. You do not want an event with a rabid animal to happen, and it happens a lot, and your dog does not have current rabies certificate. They WILL take your dog and put it down, even tho it may not have contracted rabies!!!
A good well researched article on over vaccination can be found at www.whole-dog-journal.com This publication does not accept advertising. Enter over-vaccination in the search box. they have a free email news tips available you can sign up for also.
YOUR PUPPY HAS RECEIVED HIS First SET OF SHOTS AND SEVERAL WORMINGS. DATE AND
DO NOT TAKE TO PUBLIC PARKS, THE BEACH ETC. FOR 30 DAYS. Parvo is a danger until the vaccine
takes effect. If your dog is exposed to it during this period, he will get super sick and die without intervention! NEVER, EVER GIVE YOUR DOG IVERMECTIN!!
DO NOT LET YOUR VET ADMINISTER ANOTHER SHOT FOR 3 WEEKS OR WORMER FOR 2 WEEKS. It is not safe, don’t let them talk you into it!! Your pup should not need wormer again for six months. If your vet refuses to recognize breeder shots, get another vet! Your pup has had a thorough exam at our vet usually within a week of pick up.
SERIOUSLY ! Shots and treatments you give your dog are YOUR decision, not the vet's! Your dog has had all treatments we claim it has had.
If you go to a vet, be sure to request this. Corona and Lepto shots are unnecessary and unsafe. Again, do not take your pup to public places for 30 days
OVER VACCINATION HAS BEEN PROVEN TO CAUSE CANCER!
and consideration is being given to require Rabies every5 years since tests have shown effectiveness up to seven years.
DO NOT GIVE RABIES AND 2 WAY ON THE SAME DAY. If your vet tries to talk you into doing other than this, do your own research and decide.
Vets certainly are needed, but are not gods. They kill a lot more pets than you think,
obviously they don’t advertise this, or don’t even always know that a dog they treated has died from it.
Always give plenty of fresh water. This is crucial should your dog at any time in life develop diarrhea, it can save your dog’s life. If a puppy is not drinking, it is in immediate danger!
Your puppy eats both dry and canned food. Dry food should be given freely at least while the dog is still a pup. We give canned food once a day at the rate of ¼ of a regular size can. As an adult, if you don't want to offer food free choice, feeding 2X per day is better than once.
We are often asked what food is best to give. The following is a list of recommended dry foods that have been researched to be safe in nutrition without
any dangerous chemicals or additives to harm your pet.
NO DOG SHOULD EVER GET CANCER! DOG CANCERS ARE CAUSED BY HUMANS! UNSAFE FOODS, ANTI PARASITE CHEMICALS, CHLORINATED WATER, AND OVER VACCINATION can all be cancer causing! If you have had a dog die of cancer in the past, don't feel bad, you didn't know. But now you do, so take the simple steps listed here to help prevent a re-occurance.
You will not see popular brands such as Pedigree, Iams or Science Diet for good reason. These are not listed in any order.
1.APD Select Choice 2.Blue Buffalo 3.Canidae for Dogs 4.Fromm 5.Halo 6.Holistic
Blend 7.Natura 8.Newman’s Own Organics 9.Wellness 10. Addendum 11.Taste of the Wild
12. Avoderm 13. Nature's Domain (this is available at Costco and is affordable at $33 for 35 lbs.)
If these foods are not in your price range, some more reasonably priced, but still not dangerous brands are:
* Kirkland brand at Costco. You will use the puppy formula in the yellow bag first. When switching to an adult formula,
some dogs do not seem to like the green bag, (lamb and rice) but prefer the purple bag, (chicken and rice).
*4 Health brand at Tractor Supply. There are several to choose from after the puppy formula, our adult dogs prefer Small Bites.
Wondering about the food you've been using? This website www.dogfoodadvisor.com has every food listed I can imagine. Their motto is "Saving good dogs from bad dog food." I like that!
Raw meat and bones are better for your dog than cooked. Cooked bones are brittle, sharp and unsafe. You should never give cooked bones.
If feeding hamburger, it is always best to buy meat that is on sale and have it ground while you wait. This is true for yourself as well. Meat
ground in factories can have little friends in it you had no intention of eating.
Your dog really can eat your table scraps if you eat healthy yourself. Prepackaged foods, prepared meats with nitrites,
junk food should never be given to your dog (or your kids) especially on a regular basis.
Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins and chocolate can kill your dog! Yes you’ve heard of using garlic to repel fleas and it can be safe
in small doses. There is an excellent natural heartworm/parasite treatment called PARASITE DR. that can be purchased thru WWW.NATIVEREMEDIES.COM/PETALIVE I do have a friend whose dog was in critical condition with heartworms that was saved when I recommended using this product and it is much safer and cheaper than the poisonous vet treatment. While your dog is small, it is easier to give this same natural remedy that is available in liquid drops from RBC Herbal at www.clarkia.biz until pup is close to 20 lbs. you would give 1 drop 2xday. this works for intestinal worms as well as heartworms.
Your pup is paper trained, but keep in mind it has been in a limited area. So try to limit the majority of your pups time in a limited tiled area
such as the kitchen while still interacting and giving as much attention as possible. Don’t lock pup alone in the bathroom etc. unless you absolutely must
do this at night. Give a warm comfortable sleeping place with some toys. Our pups have a night light. If your pup is crying too much at first try leaving the
light on. He won’t cry for more than a day or two. If using a crate, buy the largest you have room for and put paper in one end as it will be some time
before pup is old enough to “hold it”, so please don’t expect him to. Your pup is already accustomed to a large crate. (but we do not raise them in crates!) Your initial goal is to get him to go pody when he is outside. He will soon prefer to go outdoors.
For quick housebreaking remember they have to go immediately upon waking, so its best if you can pick the pup up and carry to the door. They housebreak quickly if you can make the effort to do this. If you’re in an apt and need to get dressed to take pup out, keep clothing ready so you can quickly throw on what you need, pick pup up and carry to pody place. Most pups chew up puppy pads so just use newspaper if this happens.
Unsexing your pup can be done as early as 3 months for boys, four months for girls. This is also when you would get their first rabies shot.
Worm your dog with Safe Guard when he/she is 6 months if for some reason you are not using the Parasite Dr. or Clarkia, which we hope you are. This is a 3 day wormer and must be done all 3 days. Do this at least once a year, we worm every six months. If your dog is on a heartworm treatment that also gets
roundworms, hookworms and whipworms you will not need any additional wormer unless he has had some fleas in which case
he would need specific tapeworm medicine. Do check with your vet to make sure the you can give the wormer with whatever heartworm preventative he is on.
Again, give heartworm meds only if not using Parasite Dr. or Clarkia as it does heartworms also.
Do not bother with a fecal exam test as they are very unreliable and a waste of time and money.
You may copy and print this page for yourself or friends. This information is a suggested guide that we use on our own animals and we have done a significant amount of research into all information contained therein. Please note we are not vets, but have frequently known more about certain subjects than the vet did. I can't tell you how many people did what their vet suggested instead of the advice we gave and lost their dogs. We certainly do not know as much as a vet, so don't get me wrong, just pay attention to what makes sense, and never be afraid to get a second opinion.
HAPPY PUPPY DAYS! ;-)
